Report to Provincial Convention July
2009
Diocesan President: Genevieve Sexton
We are ambassadors for
Christ, since God is making his appeal to others through us.
2 Corinthians 5:20
On March 7, 2009 we held our Project Outreach workshop on Development
and Peace, facilitated by Fleur Hackett, Regional Animator for Northern
Ontario. Nineteen members attended from three councils. This workshop
promoted awareness of Development and Peace in our diocese and educated
our members about international development, peace-building, fair
trade, the negligence of some Canadian mining companies overseas, and
the difficulties to overcome poverty.
We are blessed to have Father Roger Pronovost appointed as Diocesan
Spiritual Advisor. We pray he will guide us in our spiritual journey as
Women of Peace and Hope.
The 83rd Annual Diocesan Convention was held in Longlac with
thirty-seven members attending from six councils. Our major focus was
on “Women of Peace and Hope-Spirituality”.
Our guest speaker, Claudia Otto presented two workshops.
Spirituality-Women of Peace and Hope, and Hope in the Winter of Women’s
Lives. The workshop was based on the lives of modern day women of
prayer, peace and hope. Spirituality was explored and how it is core to
our human existence and wellness. A power point presentation was given,
readings from books was used to educate members on the spirituality in
their lives. The facilitator explained the importance of removing our
masks, using our senses; listening, seeing, hearing, and talking.
Members participated in a meditation ( cleansing of our whole being)
exercise at the end of the first presentation.
On April 26, 2009 a prayer service was held in honour of Our Lady of
Good Counsel and CWL Day of Peace and Hope.
As Catholic Women’s League members we are called through our baptism to
reach out to others, and to bring light into our world that needs hope
and peace. As Catholic women we have to work together in our parishes,
communities and dioceses to serve others. We have to break out of our
cocoon and invite women to join us on our spiritual journey.
The members were pleased to have Shari Guinta attend our convention.
She presented a workshop on the structure of the League including
reports.
Our projects “Buy-A-Net” and “The Love Continues” are on going.
“Pennies for WUCWO” was introduced at the convention
Maple Leaf Service Pins were presented to members in our Diocese. St.
Theresa Parish, Geraldton celebrated 20 years as a council and Our Lady
of Fatima Parish, Cochrane celebrated 55 years as a council.
Goals: Project Outreach; Pallative Care, Leadership Development
workshop, Spiritual programs.
Let us be filled with joy as we journey together as Women of Peace and
Hope, and may Our Lady of Good Counsel shower us with her love .

CWL members gathered together in Kapuskasing for our 82nd Annual
Diocesan Convention. The theme was “Love One Another with Compassion
and Forgiveness” The guest speaker, Alex Schadenberg Executive
Director, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, presented workshops on
euthanasia and assisted suicide. Our focus was on the fourth object of
the League—to protect the sanctity of human life. National President,
Lorette Noble and Provincial President, Margaret Ann Jacobs
participated in the convention. Father Fern Villeneuve gave a power
point presentation on the Eucharistic Congress. Our life members made
and presented a Life Member table cloth, with the names of our diocesan
life members embroidered around the Catholic Women’s League crest. The
ladies of Kapuskasing hosted a wonderful convention.
In each parish council, women are taking part in liturgical
celebrations through being ministers of the eucharist, lectors, servers
at mass, and helping at funerals. The members continue to serve the
people of God in diligent and creative ways. CWL members are visible in
their parishes and communities.
“Teach us to share with others at home and abroad”---the work continues.
Provide assistance to third world countries, Buy-A-Net Malaria
Prevention Group, and Catholic Missions In Canada. We are
continuing the “Walking in Love” project by donating baby shoes or
knitted baby slippers.
A membership development day was held in September. A workshop
“Communicating for Success” presented by Teresa Hartnett from Hamilton
diocese was attended by twenty-four members. There is an ongoing need
for education of members in our diocese.
Four members attended the provincial convention in Arnprior, and one
member attended the national convention and World Union of Catholic
Women’s Organization (WUCWO) Conference in Winnipeg. A report was given
and a presentation made on India at the fall meeting. All members are
encouraged to attend conventions; it’s the survival of the League in
our parishes and diocese.
One application for subsidy from the national fund was approved. This
subsidy allowed our diocese to have Teresa Hartnett present the
workshop, “Communicating for Success”. A $1000.00 subsidy from
provincial council to assist members to attend national convention and
WUCWO Conference was beneficial in our diocese.
Every Catholic woman should want to become a part of this organization.
Goals: Leadership Development, Spiritual Workshops, Outreach Projects.
