Report to Convention
July 2009
Diocesan President: Virginia Lynch
The Peterborough Diocesan Catholic
Women’s League members
have been living out the Provincial theme “Women of Peace and Hope:
Rooted in
Faith” and our Diocesan theme, “Women of Peace and Hope: Seek, and Ye
Shall
Find”, throughout 2009 in various ways. We came together as “Women of
Peace and
Hope: Rooted in Faith” at our February “Elections Workshop” where
Honorary Life
Member Lucille Cullen facilitated the workshop for us. Our day began
with a
brief Executive Meeting wherein we collectively planned the events and
budget
for the coming year.
Our 88th Annual Diocesan Convention on
May 3rd and 4th, at
the Evinrude Centre in Peterborough
was another outstanding opportunity for our members to get together for
a time
of “faith, fellowship and fulfillment”. Our Convention theme was “Women
of
Peace and Hope: Growing in Faith”. We introduced a wonderful new
“Adopt-a-Seminarian”
project at the Convention—fitting wonderfully with the current “Year of
the
Priest”. We were blessed to have over 200 members registered for the
Convention
and to have Bishop De Angelis attend, and far more Spiritual Advisors
and
priests in attendance than in recent memory.
Members also had an opportunity as
“Women of Peace and Hope:
Rooted in Faith” to participate in our Spiritual Development Day on
June 6th.
Our Diocesan Spiritual Development Chair, Paddy Fitzgerald-Nolan
coordinated
our program for the day on the teachings of St.
Paul.
Fellow officers and members from our diocese assisted throughout the
day by
sharing in the readings and their interpretations of bible passages.
Members will have another opportunity
to demonstrate how
they are “Women of Peace and Hope: Rooted in Faith” through the
opportunity to
participate in our “Project Outreach” event on “Bioethics and End of
Life Care”
taking place on September 26th in Bowmanville. Sr. Mary Rowell,
Bioethicist and
Stephen Kylie, a local Catholic lawyer, will be the facilitators for
this very
informative and pertinent day of learning for us. This day will provide
an
excellent opportunity to live out our Diocesan theme, “Women of Peace
and Hope:
Seek, and Ye Shall Find”, as we collectively strive to seek out answers
we have
on these very topical issues. This day of learning also fits
wonderfully as the
keynote event for our National initiative highlighting palliative care.
Our main goals for the next year—as
last year—are to
increase the spiritual opportunities for all of our Catholic Women’s
League
members, and to strive for better communication with all Catholic
Women’s
League members in our diocese.
