During the year 2008 we welcomed tow new councils Holy Spirit, Barrie and St. Martha and Mary, Mississauga, the parish of Peel Region Spiritual Advisor Father Edwin D’Souza.

“Love One Another as the Father Loves You” our development day theme was presented by Susan Hook Kong-Taylor and Ana Da Costa.  This beautiful day of prayer, reflection and sharing began with the celebration of the Eucharist and closed with the consecration and commitment of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

Our annual Toronto archdiocesan convention in May with its theme “Love One Another…as One in the Spirit” was an extraordinary success.  Our keynote speaker, Sister Sue Mosteller of L’Arche Daybreak, national president Lorette Noble, in her workshop, Paul Nazareth, Office of Stewardship development and His Grace Archbishop Thomas Collins, our banquet speaker, all addressed our theme in a special way.  Margaret Ann Jacobs, provincial president attended and brought her report. Two resolutions were presented and passed: 2008.01 Put the Brakes on Speeding-Regulating Speed Limiters and Speedometers and 2008.02 Address Poverty by Increasing Availability of Tax Credits for Couples.  We proudly presented the Bellelle Guerin Award to first time recipient Joanne Donovan, Nativity of Our Lord Council, Humber Valley Region and the fourth annual Patricia Beattie Archdiocesan Mentoring Award to Dorothy McGuigan, St. Martin of Tours Council, Peel with the parish level award to Ellen Sarnovsky, Our Lady of the People Council, Durham.  The community life projects were displayed from 53 councils who had risen to the challenge of improving the living conditions of the poor or underprivileged at home or abroad.

In June many of our CWL members attended the 49th International Eucharistic Congress in Quebec City and continue to share this treasured, life changing experience with their council members.  Twenty councils completed the executive training program and successful Leadership and Public speaking courses were held in four regions.  Councils and members within the archdiocese have continued to respond with generous donations to “The Call of the Poor” our 60th anniversary provincial project.

This year we did increase our membership by over 200 members and with diligent effort and through the intercession of Our Lady of Good Counsel we will welcome new and reactivated councils and meet the national challenge of a 10% increase in membership in 2009.
