Communications Directive # 3

Geraldine Canning

Greetings!
May I wish you the many blessings this Easter season brings upon us. This will be my last communication to you before your conventions and the provincial convention in July11-14th. in Cornwall. I look forward to meeting many of you there. Please forward your newsletters and highlights to me. I will display them at the convention as there will be a communications display.

Members are reminded that the League has a monthly e-newsletter available on the national web site on the 15th of each month, except during the summer when one issue covers the months of July and August. This monthly newsletter is member-driven and a means of spreading the good news of parish council events. It is compiled at the national office in consultation with the national chairperson of communications.

Informative Catholic Web Sites
Keep informed of the latest news, from the Vatican: www.vatican.va/news. The weekly English edition of L’OSSERVATORE ROMANO newsletter can be printed and used at meetings for information and discussion. Two of the latest publications are: On the occasion of the 25th  World Youth Day March 28, 2010 and the 47th World Day of Prayer for Vocations April 25, 2010.
Catholic Information Network (CIN).org offers a free exchange of news, information and discussion. CIN has been providing electronic evangelization since 1987.
Consider checking out these sites to share with your sister members as well as keeping you informed and current with Catholic issues and celebrations.

Members are reminded that when using the entire title of The Catholic Women’s League, that the word “The” must be used and capitalized. It is also correct to use the League. This is very important when using the League’s name in promotional materials or on fundraising items. When using the League crest you must obtain permission from National Office.

From National Communications Communiqué  #6.
How do we communicate?
“In St. John’s last year at the annual convention, Archbishop Martin Currie asked the assembled members to think about how the message of the church can be taken into this new world. Members are needed as valued women of the gospel and faithful witnesses, chosen to be women of peace. Archbishop Currie wondered aloud , “The world is broken. How are we going to fix it?” He said that women of hope are needed and he assured the attendants that God’s hand was in all of this. He urged them to remain faithful and to be close to the Eucharist.”

Directive #2 - 27 January 2010

Chair: Geraldine Canning

Greetings!

"The best asset any organization can have is a publication through which its aims,

objects and news may be broadcast among its members"

Except the Lord Build the House

The Canadian League

Do you use the magazine as a rich resource of the League?

Do you share it?

Do you find good news in the magazine?

Do you share it?

Do you find up to date messages from National in the magazine?

Do you share it?

Do you find information from National Chairpersons in the magazine?

Do you share it?

The League Magazine celebrates what is right with the League. It offers advice and keeps us informed of resolutions passed at National.

Are you using the magazine as you should?

It can be a vital resource in your membership campaign. Pass your Fall League Magazine on to other women in the parish. The fall issue contains all the business that was completed at the summer National Convention, including resolutions.

  THE INTERNET

BE NOT AFRAID!

Have a gathering at the local library for an evening of in-service by either a staff member or a high school student wishing to finish their community hours.

All you need to know is how to turn it on and go to the National and Provincial Catholic Women's League websites. The internet is here to stay-not to take over person to person contact, but rather to be a resource of information and to enhance our learning and communication.

On the National Catholic Women's League website there are enough programs to use in your parish for 2 to 3 years. We do not have to invent the wheel. Also, if you have a program that worked well in your parish send it on to arch/diocesan, provincial and national to share with other councils.

All arch/dioceses benefit from their website - but it needs to be kept up to date and relevant for the members. Ask your members what they would like on their arch/diocesan website i.e. prayer intentions, listing of guest speakers or fundraising ideas etc.

Do you check the National website for the e-newsletter? This free e-newsletter complements The Canadian League. Have you considered and discussed the question, how do you communicate fulfillment to a woman interested in joining the League? Forward your paragraph to national-you may win a free rosary.

 The Catholic Register:

Thank you to all the councils that forwarded pictures for the recruitment spread in the Catholic Register. Please use the centre spread in your annual membership recruitment and let us know if this is a useful tool.

 News from National:

Betty Anne Brown, National Communications Chairperson reminds us to remember the vision. "Realize what the League does best and run with it".

Remember the CWL Day of Peace & Hope Activities Kit. Communications chairpersons are encouraged to nudge councils to plan ahead for April 26, 2010. How can an impact be made in local communities on that day? How will it be promoted? You may read her communiques at http://www.cwl.ca/Communiques.htm

Message of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI "The Priest and Pastoral Ministry in a Digital World: New Media at the Service of the Word" may found at http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/messages/communications/documentshf.

May Our Lady of Good Counsel continue to guide you in all you do for God and Canada.

Directive #1  13 Sept 2009
Chair: Geraldine Canning

Welcome to all who continue to lead the League!
In July at the provincial convention I was elected to the Provincial Council and appointed communications chairperson. I have been a member for 27 years. I have worked on most of the standing committees at the archdiocesan level and president of Kingston Archdiocesan Council. I have served on the provincial council as standing chairperson of legislation for one year and two years education and health .

I look forward to working with you over the next two years. Communications is a two way street. I would like to hear from you about the activities in your area. Please forward to me a copy of your communiques to the parish councils and your arch/diocesan newsletter.
Our number one priority is passing on information to our members so they can take action. It is important that the information we pass on is accurate and correct. As well have someone edit your communiques preferably a teacher.

Become familiar with the resource material the Constitution and Bylaws, National Manual of Policy and Procedures, Executive Handbook, Arch/diocesan Manual of Policy and Procedures.

White Ribbon of Signature Campaign - October 18-25, 2009
Members are invited to work with Canadians Addressing Sexual Exploitation (C.A.S.E.) e-mail case@4case.ca, 416-412-6065. Mary Hawkley is Co-President and media contact person and Rebecca McCarrell is the volunteer office manager. Members are urged to speak out against pornography and its resultant horrors for children.
Obtain and use the C.A.S.E. kit from
www.4case.ca containing a petition form that can be presented to government. The cost of the kit is $25.00 this financially helps C.A.S.E. as it is dependent on donations.

You already know this ... BUT
Bill 118, an amendment to the Highway Traffic Act now bans drivers from using handheld devices with display screens while operating a vehicle on the road. The new rules of the road will be as follows:
-Holding or using a wireless communication device (a cell phone) or a portable electronic entertainment device (iPod) while driving is prohibited.
-Commercial GPS units along with similar dashboard-mounted devices that provide gauges and displays relating to logistical or navigation uses are fine.
-Using a cell phone or wireless communication device in hands-free mode, as long as you're not holding it during use, is fine.
-Using any device while pulled-over or parked in a way that you are not disrupting traffic is fine.
-The systems used by Ambulances, Fire Departments and Law Enforcement are exempt.
The ban is in effect as of September 1, 2009 and carries a fine of $500. Demerit points will not be included, but depending upon the violation, police will have the option to also use existing careless driving laws for additional penalties.

Report to Convention July 2009

Communications Chair: Mary Lou Watson

Over the last two years there were two goals under Communication:

1. To ensure the Provincial website content was updated regularly and that diocesan councils with website were linked.

We have been successful in updating the content of our website and 6 of the 13 Diocesan councils are linked.  As well as the latest directives issued by provincial officers, you can now find the Trillium Newsletter and other Provincial documents created for members use such Building a Relationship with Your MPP,  Catholic Education Pamphlet, checklist for proposed resolutions, Provincial travel subsidy application form,   Pauline Year Resources and as you have already heard- more downloadable forms for your use.  We hope every council has appointed someone with internet access to check out our site on a regular basis to get the latest news for their council.

We agreed to try a button on the Register website this year.  When visitors to the Register site see our button and click on it they are taken directly to our website. The stats so far show that we average 93 visitors a month from the Register site.

We are still looking for a website savvy member who would be interested in being the webmaster for our site.  If you are such a person please speak to me later or contact us through our site.

2. To promote the League in Ontario in the media.

Once again this year we had a recruitment spread in the Register in January which many councils used as part of their annual memberships drives.  This year we asked diocesan councils to submit photos of members in action doing the work of the League.  We received more pictures than we could use so you will find the rest of the pictures on the display board.  Have a look you may get some new ideas.

Ribbon of Signatures

As you may know CASE is back supporting the Ribbon of Signatures Campaign which is ongoing year-round and Sunday, October 18 to Sunday, October 25, 2009 will be the Annual Kick-Off Week for this year's focus which will again be Internet Service Providers.  The Ribbon of Signatures Kit is available from C.A.S.E. for a suggested donation of $25.  Please consider supporting CASE through this purchase.

As Women of Peace and Hope let us continue to communicate the Good News and bring a witness of our faith to all forms of media we use.
